Space Shots - Part 1, Slide 1

Introduction to Satellite Imagery
Janet W. Campbell and Cynthia B. Erickson

"Have any of you seen a satellite?" This is a trick question, because the answer is that the Moon is a natural satellite in orbit about the Earth. Actually you can see man-made satellites too. On a clear night, go outside (with plenty of bug spray) and lie on your back with your head facing North. After your eyes have adjusted to the dark, you will begin to see what looks like moving stars -- moving from north to south or vice versa. It will take the "star" just a few minutes to travel from horizon to horizon.
