Imagery Data in ESRI Software

Data users who are interested in using COOA imagery or raster format data in ESRI software products may benefit from the following tips to help them ingest, display and complete analysis on such data.

Please Note: The MODIS ocean data available through COOA's Satellite Data collection have two bands: Band 1 contains the data and Band 2 contains the counts, or the number the number of days used to calculate the chlorophyll or SST values. For the purposes of remote sensing analysis or using these data in ESRI software, these data should be considered single-band.

Working with Single Band Data Layer Images in ESRI Software:

Single band data layer images (such as MODIS ocean data in our Satellite Data collection) are best downloaded and ingested in ArcMap ArcGIS and ArcView 3.x in Arc ASCII GRID format. This format can be converted easily into an ArcInfo GRID format that loads directly into ArcMap ArcGIS and ArcView 3.x software.

The conversion of Arc ASCII GRID files can be completed in ArcMap ArcGIS via the ASCII to Raster tool in the Raster toolset in the Conversion toolbox in the ARC TOOLBOX sub-module of ArcMap or ArcCatalog.

The conversion of Arc ASCII GRID files can be completed in ArcView 3.x via the Import Data Source option available under the "file" pull down menu off of the main toolbar.

Users that want to compete this conversion must choose the "ASCII Raster" import file type option in the Import Data Source window.

Please Note: This conversion can only take place if the ArcView 3.x SPATIAL ANALYSIS extension is installed and turned on.

Adding Spatial Referencing to Images in ESRI Software:

Single band data layer images as downloaded from COOA in Arc ASCII GRID format might need to have its projection information added to it before being used in ArcMap or ArcView. This can be completed in ArcCatalog ArcGIS by accessing and altering a dataset's Spatial Reference Properties via the Spatial Reference Edit button in the Raster Dataset's Properties window. This window can be accessed by right clicking on an image file name in ArcCatalog and by choosing the properties option from its pull down context menu.
