Lyrics for Cruise Cruise Baby
Yo DIC let's kick it
Cruise cruise baby
All right stop, grab a net and a Niskin
We're on station it's time to go fishin'
Someone's puking over the railing
Hurry up 'cause my battery's failing
Will this ever stop? Yo, I can't guess
Turn off the pumps, lets MOCNESS
To the extreme the damn boat is rolling
Put it in gear let's go plankton trolling
Damn. We got Nessie in the water
We lost communication I may have to solder
Restart, but this motion's formal
Anything less than success is normal
Change it or leave it, check the baud rate
You better have data bits set at eight
Communication problems, yo we'll solve 'em
Check out our depth, it's draggin' on the bottom
Cruise cruise baby
Now that the ethanol's crankin'
With the jars all full we're preserving plankton
Quick from a point to a point to our station
Slashin' up water like our name was Jason
Hurry up; if you ain't quick you're losing
The bunks will be full of people snoozing
We finish all the nets with ease
The pump is off; it's time to catch Z's
Sleeping in the bunks below
With my hat pulled down so my eyes don't show
The crew is on standby, waiting for the next try
Did they sleep? No, they just drove by
Wake up, RPM's just dropped
Ten minutes left we should be headed to the next stop
It's just a whale
Yo, so we continued to WB, WILKINSON BASIN!
Seas were high, and the wind was worse
The boat was drifting put it in reverse
Profiler hanging out on the line
Bottles are on like grapes on a vine
Waiting for the bottles to drop
Suddenly we hear the gear slammin' in the prop like
Gunshots and we thought, "oh hell"
Now the instrument's resting on the shells
Data being collected on the bottom
The Niskins are full but we don't got 'em
Seventy grand sank into the black
We've got to pick it up before the storms come back
Grapple on the scene you know what I mean
We pulled it up and cheered like teens
Instrument problem, yo we'll solve it
Check out our buoy - a lobsterman's got it
Cruise cruise baby
At sea, and we're eating like whales
Sun chips, cheese curls, nothing goes stale
Five thousand calorie minimum
Are those cookies open yet? 'cause if not I'm gettin' into 'em
You need a stomach of steel
Or you'll be on the railing for real
A twelve hour cruise is a hell of a concept
You might get ill, so head up on deck
Seasick: feeling sick at sea
If you want to feel better stand under a tree
Puke fest, other people say damn
Take some Dramamine, like fifty milligrams
Keep a slim figure when we go on a cruise
Eat a big lunch so you've got one to lose
Motion sickness problems, you we'll solve em
Throw up our snacks let the ocean dissolve em.
Cruise cruise baby
Yo man let's get out of here
Word to your photons

Want to know what it's like to go to sea with the Center's research team? This video sums it up well. The song encompasses some typical and atypical events we have experienced on our oceanographic cruises. We have truly lost communication with our equipment, lost our equipment, and lost our lunch while working with equipment. Fortunately we can usually recover communications, find our equipment, and forget about lunch. The images are taken from REACH and Coastal Observing Center cruises over a several-year span.
Our cruises generally take about 12 hours. We have two main transects that we sample once a month, every month of the year. Our sampling takes place in the Western Gulf of Maine (off New Hampshire and Maine, USA). For more information, see our overview page, or check out info and data in our newsletter, the Gulf of Maine Monitor.
